Location & site

Monchique is an ideal destination for hiking and outdoor activities, with beautiful hiking trails and views. Monchique is a village located in the western part of the Algarve, and it is surrounded by the lush and mountainous Monchique Mountains. The village itself is situated about 20 kilometers inland from the coast, making it an ideal place for those seeking peace and nature. Monchique is known for its handmade products, including ceramics and cork products.

Monchique offers local shops for daily necessities, and for more extensive shopping, you can go to Portimão, which is located about 20 kilometers away on the coast. The village has cozy dining establishments where you can enjoy traditional Portuguese dishes and local specialties. At the heart of the village is the charming church of Nossa Senhora do Desterro, a historical landmark well worth a visit. Just 4 kilometers away from the village, you can find the thermal springs of Monchique, known as the "sacred waters" as referred to by the Romans in the first century BC.

Several stunning beaches are within a 30-45 minute drive from Monchique, making it easy to combine a mountain retreat with a beach day. On the southern Algarve coast, the nearest beaches include Praia da Rocha (about 35 minutes away), a famous beach in Portimão known for its golden sands and dramatic cliffs, and Praia de Alvor, around 40 minutes away, a beautiful, expansive beach with dunes and calm waters.

Heading west towards the Costa Vicentina, you can reach more rugged, natural beaches like Praia da Arrifana or Praia do Amado, both approximately a 45-minute drive. These beaches are popular for surfing and offer a wilder, less-developed landscape compared to the southern Algarve coast. Each of these beaches provides excellent opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, surfing, or simply enjoying a scenic coastal walk, making them perfect day-trip options from Monchique.
